How Journaling Became My Clarity Compass: A Personal Dive into Emotional Exploration

I frequently felt lost amidst a sea of emotions, searching for a guiding light to illuminate my inner realm. To my surprise, that light did not come in the form of a profound revelation but rather through the simple act of writing with a pen on paper. Join me on my exploration of journaling, a transformative journey of self-discovery, clarity, and emotional grounding.

My First Encounter with Journaling: When Pen Met Paper… Reluctantly

My initial feelings toward journaling were a blend of skepticism and curiosity. “Could pouring thoughts on paper genuinely make a difference?” I often would sit there looking at blank pages, not knowing what to write. The blank page seemed so intimidating; it was like the paper had a certain level of expectation from me. It needed to be perfect and legible, with every word spelt correctly, with proper grammar, etc….. by gully. What if someone read it?

I would sit there and overthink the process. All the swirling thoughts that were up in this crazy head of mine would suddenly come to a screeching halt! It was like they were a scared little puppy hiding behind the couch until that scary thing disappeared. I first started with writing bullet points, and then I tried recording my journal entry instead of writing it, digital journals were the next thing as it was convenient.

Finding the Right Medium: From Keyboards to Quills – My Quest for the Perfect Fit

Mobile recording and Digital journals offered convenience and a vast canvas, yet traditional journals provided a tactile, intimate connection. Mornings, I presented a fresh start, evenings a reflection. I flirted with them all, seeking my rhythm. It became apparent that the raw, uninhibited pen scribbles on paper resonated most deeply under the muted light of my bedside lamp. Eventually, I let go of the thoughts of perfectionism in my journal, realizing that there really is no right or wrong way to journal and who cares if the pages aren’t perfect really. But in the end, I found a combination of all three methods is what kept me on track!

Epiphanies on Paper and Digital: Pages Laden with Revelations

Patterns were noticed in everyday occurrences, with a recurring emotional trigger being the feeling of being overwhelmed, often associated with taking on too many responsibilities. However, it is important to note that the entries in my journal documented my resilience as I faced challenges directly. Each entry serves as evidence of my personal growth and moments of self-discovery.

The Role of Journaling in Emotional Awareness: A Mirror to My Inner World

Journaling became more than just recounting daily events. It morphed into a ritual of introspection. Seeing my feelings on the pages made me realize they were no longer abstract but tangible, allowing me to approach them analytically. Decisions felt more grounded, reactions more measured, and self-awareness heightened. The daily reflections became a compass, guiding me through the maze of emotions. Navigating through my emotional landscape, I learned so much and continue to learn a lot about myself.

To anyone teetering on the edge of journaling, I urge you to dive in. It’s a personal journey unique to every soul. There’s no right or wrong way, just your way. If you’re looking for a starting point, try this prompt: “Today, I felt… because…”. Let the ink flow and your emotions guide.

What is an Abstract Art Journal Anyways?

In an Abstract art journal, you are not just creating art, but you are also creating a space for you to express your deepest feelings through visual art. An art journal can be done in many different ways and doesn’t have to be done with abstract art but I find that the process is the most expressive. But allowing yourself the freedom to let go of perfection is very freeing to the soul and allows you the space to dig deeper and tap into areas you may have not tapped into before. It can be exhilarating sometimes after a session or exhausting depending on what you are personally working on but you will feel a sense of accomplishment and sometimes relief or like a weight has been lifted off of you. This is why I love abstract art! If you have been following me for a while you may have heard me say that you don’t need to be an artist to be able to keep an art journal. This practice isn’t about the art being perfect or being something that you would show to the world. This practice is solely about expressing yourself and the feelings you have been holding onto; in the colors, brush strokes, markings, textures, etc that resonate with you.

Best Way To Start An Abstract Art Journal?

Ok, so what is the best way to start?

Start by just experimenting and seeing what comes out. In the first few pages of your journal, use various materials like paint, inks, textured paper, markers, pencil crayons, grease crayons, clay, or any medium that feels right to create simple shapes and patterns. You can meditate before you journal or listen to music while creating; do anything that gets you into the right headspace. Create a texture palette and explore it as you go along. Experiment with different color combinations and create depth by layering elements. If you like writing you can always write on the page first. It doesn’t have to resemble a journal entry, it could be in point form or just random words all over the page, a single word repeatedly written in a shape or just a single word. You can write underneath your art or on top… whatever feels right. Maybe it’s a powerful word that you want to shout to the world or maybe it is something deep and personal that you are processing and letting go of. Whatever feels right in the moment is the way to go. Maybe while you’re creating, keep an open mind and know that your art is a reflection of yourself. There are no wrong answers – just be sure to enjoy the journey. Have fun and see where it takes you! Good luck!

It is amazing once you are able to really get into the process and let yourself go, you will see how it can benefit your mental and physical health! Journaling can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Start small and focus on the basics. Put paint to paper and let your thoughts flow – don’t worry about making a masterpiece. Letting go of perfectionism is often the first step in getting started with art journaling. Remember that there are no rules; you have the freedom to express yourself however you like.
