Art as a Window to the Soul: My Therapeutic Art Journey

Before me lay an empty canvas, expansive and daunting. A whirlwind of thoughts buzzed through my mind, from gloom to optimism, creating a sense of overload. Yet serenity washed over me when my brush met the bold blue paint. Every brushstroke turned into a spoken word, each color a felt emotion, and eventually, my internal tumult metamorphosed into a radiant work of art. This marked my initial encounter with art therapy, and the odyssey was far from over.

Why Art?

Art serves as a universal language, transcending cultural and generational barriers. You don’t need to be fluent in any specific dialect to appreciate or create it. From ancient cave drawings to modern digital masterpieces, art has been a steadfast companion to humanity, open to anyone eager to express themselves through it.

Non-verbal Expression:

At times, words just don’t cut it. Deeply rooted emotions frequently yearn for an alternative way to be expressed. Art, in its various guises, serves as a sanctuary for these feelings, granting them a voice when words falter.

My Artistic Revelations:

Every art session feels like peeling layers from an onion. One piece, a tumultuous mix of reds and blacks, captured the raw intensity of a flare-up day. Another, awash in radiant yellows and soothing blues, highlighted a day filled with hope and community in our Beautifully Broken Wellness Warriors group. Each creation is a chapter in my journey, a tangible slice of my spirit.

Exploring Crystal Energy: Color Therapy’s Role in Managing Chronic Illness

Exploring The Power of Color and Crystals!

I’ve always found the interplay between color, mood, and wellness fascinating. As a therapeutic art and mindfulness coach, I’ve seen firsthand how hues can impact emotions, inspire creativity, and promote healing. But until recently, I had not explored the world of crystal energy and its potential links to chronic illness management. Intrigued by the possibility of adding another layer of depth to my practice, I embarked on a discovery journey.

As I began my research, I was captivated by an incredible blog that explored color and crystal energy in great detail. It discussed how colors like blue and green, linked to tranquillity, clarity, and growth, could positively influence our energy and environment. Additionally, it explained how these colors correspond to specific chakras and crystals, adding an extra dimension to the healing process.

The color blue, for instance, is often associated with calmness and peace, making it an excellent color choice for areas where relaxation is the priority, such as a bedroom or a bathroom. This aligns with what we know about cool colors’ physiological effects: they can slow heart rate and decrease blood pressure. The soothing influence of blue could be particularly beneficial for those living with chronic illnesses, where stress management is often a crucial part of their well-being strategy.

Furthermore, blue is connected with the throat and third eye chakras, energy centers related to communication and intuition. These chakras are linked with blue crystals like calcite and kyanite, which are said to aid in clear communication and emotional release. Blue’s association with honesty, intelligence, and trust also contributes to its therapeutic potential, encouraging individuals to express their truths and trust in their healing journey.

Then there’s the color green, associated with the heart chakra, symbolizing love, hope, and healing. Like blue, green is a cool color with a calming effect, which can help those living with chronic illness maintain a sense of tranquillity amid ongoing health challenges. The blog highlighted using green crystals, such as malachite and fluorite, purported to support growth, abundance, and transformation.

While I’m new to the world of crystals, what fascinates me is the notion that these beautiful pieces of Earth could interact with our own ‘crystalline’ bodies and potentially amplify the healing intentions we set. This idea is captivating and warrants further exploration, even as we acknowledge that this is a holistic and complementary approach to be used alongside conventional medical treatments.

Of course, it’s always essential to remember that our experiences with colors and crystals can be highly personal and subjective. What resonates deeply with one person may not resonate with another. That’s why I advocate for individual exploration and personalization in the healing journey as a therapeutic art and mindfulness coach.

The combination of color, crystal energy, and mindful awareness of our environment presents a compelling approach to wellness, particularly for those navigating the complexities of chronic illnesses. I’m excited to continue exploring these areas and to see how this knowledge can enhance the healing experiences of those I coach.

We will discover the best art supplies, organization ideas for your creative space, and how to foster a nurturing environment for your artistic endeavours. Get ready to unleash your creative powers!

1. Choose the Right Art Supplies:

Investing in high-quality art supplies can significantly impact the final outcome of your artwork. While countless options are available, focus on finding those that resonate with you and suit your unique creative expression. Whether it’s watercolours, acrylics, coloured pencils, or pastels, selecting the suitable medium will amplify your artistic journey. Experiment with various tools and materials to see what sparks joy and brings you the most satisfaction. Now, you should keep in mind that even though high-quality products will impact the outcome when you are first starting and finding a medium that you enjoy exploring. Start with the lower-end brands while exploring until you are sure of the medium/s that you want to use.

2. Organize Your Creative Space:

Creating a well-organized creative space is vital for an enjoyable artistic experience. When your supplies are easily accessible, and your workspace is clutter-free, you can fully immerse yourself in the artistic process. Use storage containers, shelves, or a designated art cart to keep your materials in order. A tidy space enhances your creativity and allows you to focus solely on your art. Having a Rubbermaid tub to keep all your supplies in is an excellent idea for a few reasons, save space, have it all in one place and take it with you when travelling.

3. Embrace Playful Experimentation:

Art is about embracing experimentation and letting go of the fear of making mistakes. As individuals with chronic illnesses, you know that life can be unpredictable, and art provides a space to freely express yourself without judgment. This is your safe space where every brush stroke brings a sense of healing. Embrace playful experimentation, try new techniques, mix colours, different paints, stamps, and collage moulds and see where your creativity leads you. Therapeutic art is not about right or wrong outcomes; it’s about the joy of creating.

4. Create a Nurturing Environment:

Your art practice can be a source of comfort and solace. A place you crave to go find your balance, thoughts, and emotions. It’s where you want to cultivate a nurturing environment where you can freely express your emotions and thoughts through art. You use your creative sanctuary to relax, release stress, and find moments of peace. Whether it’s a quiet corner in your home, a cozy studio, or a favourite natural spot, surround yourself with elements that inspire and uplift you. Find a cozy blanket, pillow, nice place to sit or lay down, candles or lights, music and most importantly, NO PHONES!!! 

5. Practice Mindful Art:

Mindfulness and therapeutic art go hand in hand. Engage yourself in mindful art sessions where you fully immerse in the process without judgment. Pay attention to the sensations of the materials in your hands, the brush strokes on the canvas, or the sound of a pencil against paper. Mindful art allows you to be fully present and engaged at the moment, providing a sense of tranquillity and focus.

Building your art toolkit is a rewarding and enriching journey that will elevate your therapeutic art practice to new heights. Embrace the joy of experimentation, select the art supplies that speak to your soul, and create an inviting and nurturing environment where your creativity can flow. My Journey with Therapeutic Art and Mindfulness

Hey there friends!

As your therapeutic art and mindfulness coach, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to witness the transformative power of self-expression through art. Today, I want to share my personal journey with you – how art and mindfulness have played a pivotal role in my life, especially since being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

When the news of my diagnosis hit, I found myself in a period of rest and reflection. I needed something to occupy my time and keep my mind engaged. So, I turned to familiar creative avenues and crafts I knew I could handle. But little did I know that one decision to pick up a paintbrush would completely change the course of my chronic illness journey.

Painting became a revelation. It wasn’t just a pastime; it was a lifeline. With each brushstroke, I found joy, solace, and a sense of freedom I hadn’t experienced before. It was like a portal into a world where pain and worries temporarily faded away. Art became my sanctuary, a safe space to explore my emotions, fears, and dreams without judgment.

You see, therapeutic art is not about artistic expertise or mastering technical skills. It’s about self-expression, allowing yourself to be vulnerable, and embracing the authenticity of your creations. There’s no right or wrong way to express yourself through art; it’s about trusting your instincts and letting your inner voice guide the creative process.

Through painting, I discovered a profound connection with mindfulness. I became fully present in each moment, immersed in the flow of colors, shapes, and textures. It took me to a place of deep self-awareness, where I could explore my emotions with curiosity and without judgment. Art brought mindfulness to the next level, allowing me to get to know myself on a profoundly intimate level.

As I continued my artistic journey, I noticed how painting helped manage my depression and anxiety, making those challenging moments more manageable and, at times, even at bay. It provided a space to process and release otherwise tricky emotions to put into words.

Though my body might still be a mystery at times, art has taught me to accept it as only part of who I am, not defining my entire being. It has empowered me to understand my body’s signals, recognize patterns, and advocate for myself better. Through art and mindfulness, I’ve learned to communicate how I feel to myself and those around me, fostering deeper connections and support.

Art became my catalyst for healing, guiding me toward a path of self-discovery and empowerment. It has brought immeasurable value to my life, helping me navigate the complexities of chronic illness with grace and resilience.

So, to all of you who may be exploring therapeutic art for the first time or are already on this journey, I encourage you to embrace the process wholeheartedly. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, and let your creativity flow without constraint. Trust that your artistic expressions hold incredible healing potential.
