Unleash Your Creative Powers!

Hey friends.

Are you prepared to set out on an exciting adventure? of artistic exploration? Therapeutic art can unlock your inner creativity, offering a safe space for self-expression and healing, especially for individuals with chronic illnesses. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just beginning, building your art toolkit can take your creative practice to new heights. In this blog post, I will dive into the tips and tricks that empower you to create confidently and joyfully. We will discover the best art supplies, organization ideas for your creative space, and how to foster a nurturing environment for your artistic endeavours. Get ready to unleash your creative powers!

1. Choose the Right Art Supplies:

Investing in high-quality art supplies can significantly impact the final outcome of your artwork. While countless options are available, focus on finding those that resonate with you and suit your unique creative expression. Whether it’s watercolours, acrylics, coloured pencils, or pastels, selecting the suitable medium will amplify your artistic journey. Experiment with various tools and materials to see what sparks joy and brings you the most satisfaction. Now, you should keep in mind that even though high-quality products will impact the outcome when you are first starting and finding a medium that you enjoy exploring. Start with the lower-end brands while exploring until you are sure of the medium/s that you want to use.

2. Organize Your Creative Space:

Creating a well-organized creative space is vital for an enjoyable artistic experience. When your supplies are easily accessible, and your workspace is clutter-free, you can fully immerse yourself in the artistic process. Use storage containers, shelves, or a designated art cart to keep your materials in order. A tidy space enhances your creativity and allows you to focus solely on your art. Having a Rubbermaid tub to keep all your supplies in is an excellent idea for a few reasons, save space, have it all in one place and take it with you when travelling.

3. Embrace Playful Experimentation:

Art is about embracing experimentation and letting go of the fear of making mistakes. As individuals with chronic illnesses, you know that life can be unpredictable, and art provides a space to freely express yourself without judgment. This is your safe space where every brush stroke brings a sense of healing. Embrace playful experimentation, try new techniques, mix colours, different paints, stamps, and collage moulds and see where your creativity leads you. Therapeutic art is not about right or wrong outcomes; it’s about the joy of creating.

4. Create a Nurturing Environment:

Your art practice can be a source of comfort and solace. A place you crave to go find your balance, thoughts, and emotions. It’s where you want to cultivate a nurturing environment where you can freely express your emotions and thoughts through art. You use your creative sanctuary to relax, release stress, and find moments of peace. Whether it’s a quiet corner in your home, a cozy studio, or a favourite natural spot, surround yourself with elements that inspire and uplift you. Find a cozy blanket, pillow, nice place to sit or lay down, candles or lights, music and most importantly, NO PHONES!!!

5. Practice Mindful Art:

Mindfulness and therapeutic art go hand in hand. Engage yourself in mindful art sessions where you fully immerse in the process without judgment. Pay attention to the sensations of the materials in your hands, the brush strokes on the canvas, or the sound of a pencil against paper. Mindful art allows you to be fully present and engaged at the moment, providing a sense of tranquillity and focus.

Building your art toolkit is a rewarding and enriching journey that will elevate your therapeutic art practice to new heights. Embrace the joy of experimentation, select the art supplies that speak to your soul, and create an inviting and nurturing environment where your creativity can flow. Remember, art is about self-expression, healing, and finding solace amid life’s challenges. So let your imagination run wild, unleash your creative powers, and revel in the beauty of your artistic exploration.

1. All artists charge a fortune for their creations.

NOPE! Actually, most artists undervalue their work. But we’ll delve deeper into that soon.

2. There’s a secret formula for pricing art that applies to everyone.

WRONG! Art pricing is a personal journey, unique to each artist, even those in the same medium.

TRUTH BOMB: Art galleries snatch up 40-60% of the sale.

FACT CHECK: Retail spaces grab around 30% of the sale.

3. You’re not a “real” artist until you sell outside your circle of family, friends, and acquaintances.

FALSE! Building your business from your personal network is essential. Every sale is legit, so don’t let impostor syndrome sneak in. As your art biz grows, you’ll naturally branch out.

4. The average art buyer is clueless about the true worth of artwork.

TRUE STORY. Most people buying from you might not have experience purchasing original pieces directly from the artist. It’s our job as artists to enlighten them on the value of original artwork vs. a Homegoods print. Oh, the conversations we’ve had!

5. Art buyers always want to haggle over the price of a painting.

MYTH BUSTED. Customers often follow the artist’s lead. The right client values your work and will be happy to pay a fair price.

6. You should be open to negotiating your prices.

MAYBE / SOMETIMES. Don’t haggle over small paintings. For larger, pricier pieces, negotiation can be a smart move. The buyer feels better about their investment if they feel they’ve scored a deal or compromise. However, it’s completely up to you!

Were you surprised by any of these myths? Do you have any other art pricing misconceptions you’ve heard? Spill the tea in the comments!

Hobbyist Thinking – If you treat art like a hobby or side hustle, there’s a good chance you’re undervaluing your work.

Artist Insecurity – Impostor syndrome and a lack of confidence often lead to underpriced artwork. Don’t let comparison destroy your creativity or your money mindset.

Price Wars – Competing on price alone is a losing game. The customers you want fall in love with your art, not the price tag. They’ll find a way to own your masterpiece, even if it means sacrificing elsewhere.

Do you think artists undercharge for their work? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Why Raising Your Prices Is A Must – Setting your worth is just one reason to boost your art prices. Price like a pro, and you’ll be valued as a pro. Owning original art is a privilege and should cost more than a mass-produced print. You’ve got a unique magic that ONLY YOU can offer!

How to Price Your Art: The Great Debate – Pricing art is a hot topic, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But what if I could teach you my Art Pricing Formula and Profit Strategy through a comprehensive course, complete with live coaching calls? If that sounds like your cup of tea, drop your info via the button below and stay in the loop!

No doubt you’ve stumbled upon a myriad pricing strategies, each with its unique formula, involving size, materials, skill, and the ever-elusive concept of time. But why does it feel like finding the Holy Grail would be easier than getting a straight answer on art pricing?

Well, my friends, it’s because pricing is a bit of a double-edged sword. It’s a waltz between the objective and the subjective, a balancing act on the tightrope of value and worth. Each artist has unique experiences, skills, and flair, making it impossible to squeeze them into a one-size-fits-all pricing corset.

So, here’s the skinny on what not to base your prices on:

  1. Time spent: Your customers don’t have a say in this, and time doesn’t necessarily equate to value or quality. Remember the Picasso tale – it took him a lifetime, not five minutes.

  2. Cost of art classes or art school: Sorry, but your degree doesn’t automatically inflate the value of your work.

  3. The cost of your materials doubled or tripled: This strategy overlooks the value of your skill and labor.

  4. What someone else charges: This is about you, not them.

  5. Your emotions, mood, or sentiments: Art is subjective, but pricing shouldn’t be.

  6. Whatever the customer can pay: You’re not running a flea market here!

Now that we’ve covered the ‘don’ts,’ let’s dive into the ‘dos.’ Your pricing should be objective, consistent, and based on a formula that accounts for:

  1. Your Skill Level: This is where those years of honing your craft come into play.

  2. The Market: This includes your past successful sales and your competition’s pricing. But remember, their prices are a reference, not a rule.

  3. Size: Bigger can often mean pricier, but this isn’t a hard and fast rule.

  4. Materials: Your canvas and any specialty materials factor into your costs and, thus, your pricing.

In a nutshell, art pricing is a deliciously complex dish, and you need more than one ingredient to get it right. Stick to a consistent pricing formula, consider the cost of doing business, tie your prices into your overall profit plan, and above all, value your work. Because if you don’t, who will?

In the grand circus of art, undercharging is the clown nobody laughs at, and overpricing is the high-wire act that always falls. So, find your balance, stand tall, and charge what you’re worth. Because, my friend, you are worth it!

Now, go forth and conquer the art world with your pricing prowess, Picasso! Who knows, you might create the next masterpiece… and price it perfectly. Here’s to your art, your passion, and your success!

10 Tips for Creating Abstract Paintings That Stand Out

10 Tips for Creating Abstract Paintings That Stand Out

Hey there, friends!

Did you know that investing in top-notch acrylic paint is the key to creating stunning abstract paintings? The difference between professional and student-grade acrylics is truly amazing – the pigmentation is superior, the colors are more vibrant, and the paint is more consistent and permanent when you go with professional grade. Personally, I love using Liquitex, Winsor Newton, and Golden brands of professional acrylic paint; they’re perfect for artists of all levels. With the versatility and quick-drying nature of acrylic paint, you can easily bring your unique vision to life on canvas or paper, using a wide variety of pigmentation and texture varieties only offered by professional-grade acrylic paints. To keep your artwork looking fresh for years to come, it’s important to use a good quality varnish or UV protection spray, so keep that in mind! When it comes to creating abstract art, composition plays a major role in making the painting stand out.

Let Me Give You 10 Tips To Help You Bring Your Abstract  Paintings To Life:

Abstract painting is a wonderful way to express yourself creatively without any restrictions or limitations. So, if you’re ready to dive into the world of abstract art, it’s time to grab some supplies and let your imagination run wild!

1) The first step is to start with basic shapes, such as squares, circles, and rectangles, allowing your painting to evolve organically.

2) Begin with an abstract concept in mind and let your artwork tell a story.

3) Experimenting with different color combinations can add visual depth and interest to your artwork.

4) Don’t be afraid to take risks and use bold hues, layering on thick coatings of paint for an impressive effect.

5) Using brushstrokes or blending complementary colors together can also help add movement and flow to your paintings.

6) Add texture with sponges, rags, and other tools to achieve more dimensionality in the painting.

7) Let certain areas of the abstract painting remain unpainted as negative space helps balance the composition.

8) It’s important to step back from your artwork from time to time to view it from a distance to gain insights and perspectives on the art as a whole. To do that, using canvases of good quality is essential.

9) Incorporate abstract shapes and symbols to add further complexity to the artwork.

10) Add splatters of contrasting colors for a final abstract touch.

When it comes to creating an amazing abstract painting, having the right tools is key. Acrylic paint is an absolute must-have, and there are some fantastic professional brands out there that offer good-quality pigments. For mixing colors, consider using disposable palettes or paper plates. And when it comes to canvases, investing in quality can make a huge difference in the finished product.

And let’s not forget: choosing the right brushes is crucial! Look for brushes made from synthetic materials like filberts or flats featuring soft bristles. Stiff brushes can leave marks on your paintings, and cheap brushes will shed hair like crazy 😡 … not fun.

If shopping locally is an option for you, I always encourage supporting your local art store. If not, you can find many products online from Amazon, Michaels, and Treasure Mart, to name a few.

So, gather your inspiration and art supplies and create some abstract masterpieces!

Until next time, friends!! 😊🎨🖌️

What is an Abstract Art Journal Anyways?

What is an Abstract Art Journal Anyways?

Abstract Art Journal

What is an Abstract Art Journal Anyways?

In an Abstract art journal, you are not just creating art, but you are also creating a space for you to express your deepest feelings through visual art. An art journal can be done in many different ways and doesn’t have to be done with abstract art but I find that the process is the most expressive. But allowing yourself the freedom to let go of perfection is very freeing to the soul and allows you the space to dig deeper and tap into areas you may have not tapped into before. It can be exhilarating sometimes after a session or exhausting depending on what you are personally working on but you will feel a sense of accomplishment and sometimes relief or like a weight has been lifted off of you. This is why I love abstract art! If you have been following me for a while you may have heard me say that you don’t need to be an artist to be able to keep an art journal. This practice isn’t about the art being perfect or being something that you would show to the world. This practice is solely about expressing yourself and the feelings you have been holding onto; in the colors, brush strokes, markings, textures, etc that resonate with you.

Best Way To Start An Abstract Art Journal?

Ok, so what is the best way to start?

Start by just experimenting and seeing what comes out. In the first few pages of your journal, use various materials like paint, inks, textured paper, markers, pencil crayons, grease crayons, clay, or any medium that feels right to create simple shapes and patterns. You can meditate before you journal or listen to music while creating; do anything that gets you into the right headspace. Create a texture palette and explore it as you go along. Experiment with different color combinations and create depth by layering elements. If you like writing you can always write on the page first. It doesn’t have to resemble a journal entry, it could be in point form or just random words all over the page, a single word repeatedly written in a shape or just a single word. You can write underneath your art or on top… whatever feels right. Maybe it’s a powerful word that you want to shout to the world or maybe it is something deep and personal that you are processing and letting go of. Whatever feels right in the moment is the way to go. Maybe while you’re creating, keep an open mind and know that your art is a reflection of yourself. There are no wrong answers – just be sure to enjoy the journey. Have fun and see where it takes you! Good luck!

Can Art Journaling Help With Mental and or Physical Health Challenges?

Absolutely! Art journaling is a great way to express your thoughts and feelings in a safe, creative space. It can help to reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and foster healthy coping mechanisms. Journaling allows you to unload the overwhelming emotions that come with life’s many challenges while providing an opportunity for self-reflection. It is amazing once you are able to really get into the process and let yourself go, you will see how it can benefit your mental and physical health! Journaling can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Start small and focus on the basics. Put paint to paper and let your thoughts flow – don’t worry about making a masterpiece. Letting go of perfectionism is often the first step in getting started with art journaling. Remember that there are no rules; you have the freedom to express yourself however you like.

What Are Some Benefits Of Painting Abstract Art Journaling?

Therapeutic release. Painting abstract art can be a great way to explore your feelings without the need for words. It allows you to express yourself in an entirely unique and creative manner, giving you a much-needed outlet for stress and emotions.
The benefits of engaging in abstract art journaling are numerous and multifaceted. For many, this creative outlet serves as a potent form of self-expression and emotional release, creating a sense of fulfillment and personal empowerment. Furthermore, it can improve problem-solving skills and foster innovative thinking through the exploration of new techniques and themes. Ultimately, abstract art journaling can be a transformative experience that simultaneously expands one’s emotional, intellectual, and artistic horizons. I hope this blog post will help you get started on your abstract art journal. This is just the beginning of an exciting adventure of self-discovery and expression. There is so much more to explore in this method of self-discovery, mental health, and physical health benefits through abstract art journaling. Stay tuned for my upcoming art journaling membership coming in late May!
